2010 Sea OtterClassic Pro Downhill

The Sea Otter Classic is the kick off for all things cycling. It is the start of the professional series for road, mountain and even BMX riders. The event is huge and most companies affiliated with cycling have a presence there. It would take a full day to walk through the whole venue and see everything. The best approach is to mark the booths you want to see and go check those out. Who knows what you may find on the way. Sea Otter the event is typically a success and I would say that is true for this one as well. Many downhill riders complain about the course but while out on the trail forget about their gripes and have fun hitting the jumps and drifting the turns.

The 2010 Sea Otter classic had a huge turnout of riders. In fact it was the first time the female class has had over sixteen in close to a decade. The course is the same layout that riders have been racing on for about that same amount of time. Those who made it out to the DS Pro finals that day must have noticed something strange in the air?

Originally scheduled to take place in Schladming, Austria, the sixth round of the 2010 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup will now take place in another Austrian resort, Leogang (Salzburger Land). The date, (June 19th and 20th) remains unchanged.

2010 Freeride Mountain Bike (FMB) World Tour Expanded

The recently announced Freeride Mountain Bike (FMB) World Tour gained lots of interest and positive feedback in the mountain bike scene and industry as well as from event organizers. The Freeride Mountain Bike Association (FMBA) is now proud to present overall 15 competitions taking part in the FMB World Tour. Only the four best results of each registered rider count for the final FMB World Tour ranking. The single events are categorized into four levels: BRONZE, SILVER, GOLD and DIAMOND. Due to the support from the industry the FMB World Tour will pay the top riders of 2010 an overall prize fund of 20,000 Euros.

The FMBA has been quite busy during the last weeks: negotiations with different event organizers have been held, the event categorization was finalized, the single competitions were rated, the FMBA board of directors was voted and industry supporters have been acquired.

The categorization system integrates a multiplicity of different criteria that ascertain the level of each single event. Main criteria are: the type and demands of the course, the rider line-up, the level of prize money, the professionalism of judging, media output and services in general. All competitions of the FMB World Tour have been categorized in close cooperation with the event organizers into one of four levels: BRONZE, SILVER, GOLD and DIAMOND. The FMBA reviews the events year by year in order to make sure these can keep the standards of their categories or change to a different level. The highest competition level is DIAMOND. These events are fulfilling the criteria right now in the best possible way.

From BRONZE to GOLD, the higher the competition level the more points are collected by attempting riders for the overall FMB World Tour ranking. Each rider’s best four results at the different FMB World Tour competitions and related points count for the overall ranking. So the riders can collect points and improve their standings all season long. There are three BRONZE, five SILVER and five GOLD competitions in 2010. The two most important DIAMOND FMB World Tour stops, the Kokanee Slopestyle at Crankworx Whistler and the Red Bull Rampage, are at the same time the last ones of the whole FMB World Tour schedule:

Trek Signs McCaul and Semenuk For Two More Years

(Waterloo, WI)—Trek Bicycle, the world leader in bicycle technology and innovation, confirmed its support for competitive freeride and slopestyle cycling today by announcing it will continue its relationship with professional athletes Cam McCaul and Brandon Semenuk for the next two years. McCaul and Semenuk will join other Trek-sponsored gravity athletes, including Andrew Shandro and Rene Wildhaber, in creating Trek’s newest team, the C3 Project: Competition, Cinematics, and Creativity.

“Trek is absolutely thrilled to announce this commitment to Brandon and Cam and the freeride / slopestyle scene,” remarked Trek MTB Global Brand Manager Michael Browne. “We’ve watched these athletes develop in ways we never imagined over the past few years—winning RedBull Rampage, the Claymore Challenge, and Crankworx Colorado, just to name a few—and we’re eager to see where this can go.”

In 2008, Semenuk became the youngest rider ever to win the Red Bull Rampage aboard his Trek Session 88. Revered as one of the most extreme gravity competitions ever conceived, Semenuk’s first place finish amongst a field of freeride veterans helped to propel him into the mountain bike world’s spotlight. “We’re stoked to watch Brandon defend his title at the Rampage this fall,” added Browne.

“I’m very excited to continue working with Trek over the next couple seasons,” said 19-year-old Whistler-based Semenuk. “The bikes have always been flawless and just get better every year. I’m really looking forward to being a part of the C3 Project and watching it take shape.”

A long-time Trek sponsored rider and one of the best-known personalities on the freeride scene, McCaul has been tearing up gravity competitions and feature films since 2003. He’s a regular instructor at Summer Gravity Camp, a week-long instructional mountain bike skills camp founded by Andrew Shandro, held each July in Whistler, BC.

“2010 will be my sixth full season riding Trek bikes!” said McCaul. “The last five years have been amazing, and it’s the best feeling ever to be staring through the sites of this shotgun with at least another two years loaded in the chamber. I’m looking forward to pulling the trigger on some really cool stuff this year, and I couldn’t imagine doing any of it without a Trek between my legs. Giddyup!”

As Trek’s newest cycling team, the C3 Project will focus heavily on capturing video and photo assets in addition to participating in slopestyle and dirt jump competitions. Semenuk and McCaul are both featured in Anthill Films’ new feature-length production, Follow Me, to be released this April at the 2010 Sea Otter Classic. The new team and a dedicated website will be officially launched in the coming months.

“The name of this new team, The C3 Project: Competition, Creativity and Cinematics, is a nod to the non-traditional nature of the sport and will allow us to further embrace riders’ activities through new team paint schemes on Scratch, Session, Ticket and Remedy frames,” said Browne. “We’ll also be sharing the amazing footage we capture throughout the season on a new website that will go live later this spring.”

Santa Cruz Bikes Announce Carbon Fiber Nomad

No, this isn't an April Fool's joke, and yes, this is the official release for the new carbon fiber Santa Cruz Nomad. Do not confuse it with any of the previous, most likely inaccurate, information that has leaked already. There's a lot of ground to cover here, so we apologize in advance for the length of this email, but bear with us.

It seems like barely a year and a half ago we totally revamped our beloved gnarl-hound with updated suspension, geometry and a host of details that saw an entirely new Nomad emerging from where the old Nomad had been - lighter, sleeker, snappier and at the same time tougher. Time flies. It was just a year and a half ago that eight unlucky souls got mangled in the Hellride while claiming first saddle time aboard the new beast. And while the now tried and true aluminum Nomad is still a vital part of our lineup, we decided to splice some carbon fiber into it's DNA and see what happens.

The new Nomad-c marks our fourth carbon fiber bike, and is the culmination of what has been a very enlightening process for us, pun intended. In this case, the move to a carbon fiber chassis has chopped a whopping 1.25 pounds off the weight of the aluminum Nomad, while at the same time increasing strength and stiffness by large margins. The existing aluminum Nomad isn't exactly a porker in terms of weight or a wilting violet with regard to strength, so being able to reduce weight by that much and at the same time increase strength and stiffness, without skimping on any features, is about as much of a win-win scenario as we could hope for. It's light. We are seeing frames weighing in at 6.1 pounds with a RockShox Monarch 3.3 shock.

(Bear in mind, this is a tad heavier than the 5.9 pounds that is floating around out there on an early-print pdf of the marketing tri-fold for the Nomad that somebody leaked onto the interwebs before we intended anything to go public. That's what happens when the wrong info gets out before all the proof reading is done. And before anyone calls foul about using a light shock like a Monarch for a hard hitting bike like the Nomad, add a third of a pound for a Fox DHX air, or just over a pound for a DHX RC4 coil. Then go compare...)

There are three key aspects to our carbon fiber process that differentiate it from many others and at the same time allow us to achieve the strength (and stiffness) to weight characteristics that we are so in love with. They are:

One piece lay-up and curing

By laying up and curing the entire front triangle as a single piece, instead of assembling or bonding pieces together during the process, less material can be used to achieve the same end. Suspension pivots, disc mounts and the ISCG05 tabs are all molded into the frame in this process. Additionally, we overbuilt things in critical areas. The underside of the downtube features five layers of UD fiber, two of aramid fiber, and one of 3k weave, in order to thrive in sharp and pointy environments. The chainstays also benefit from extra layers of material. These all serve as added insurance in rocky terrain.

Continuing fibers around tube junctions

One piece lay-up and molding allows the use of continuous fibers throughout the frame, meaning the structure can more widely distribute loads and absorb impact energy.

Net shape lay-up and fiber compaction

Our proprietary manufacturing process allows us to precisely control both the outside and inside frame shape while compacting the laminate layers, which in turn results in superior stiffness and strength while eliminating excess material.

We don't have any fancy acronyms for this, but it is unique - nobody else is making carbon fiber mountain bikes this way at this time. And, while we don't have the selling power of a carefully focus-grouped nickname behind the process, the results are pretty enough that we are proud to show off what the insides of our frames look like. You'd be surprised what you might find inside some of the other frames out there...
