2011 iXS Euro Champs Teaser

As has already been announced at the Eurobike tradeshow, iXS is going to organize the European championships in both downhill and 4cross for the next three years. The official title is going to be „iXS European Championships“. For the first year, Zermatt in Switzerland has been chosen as venue.

The extremely demanding downhill track at the slopes of the famous Matterhorn is going to be modified in order to move the finish area directly into the village. The 4cross track, on the other hand, is situated at the Sunnegga paradise, at 2250 metres above sea level. So the spectators can enjoy more than just top-level elite sports, they also get a unique panorama view with no less than 38 impressive peaks that rise to more than 4000 metres elevation.

As the venue enjoys worldwide publicity, this also helps the quest to bring the European championships back to where they belong, which is exactly what iXS is intending to do. After all these championships are supposed to be something special not only from the sports’ perspective, they have to be put into the focus of the public as well. In the past, this was a factor that got neglected repeatedly, a prominent reason for some of the major national federations not to send their athletes.

The experience gathered from hosting downhill and 4cross races for a couple of years is going to be helpful to lift both the level and the reputation of these continental championships. A first important goal was to find venues that are situated in central Europe, making them easy to reach for most national teams. Of course the fact that next year’s World championships will be held just one week later around the corner in ChampĂ©ry is helpful as this lowers travel expenses.

Zermatt and iXS will do everything to turn the first iXS European Championships into both an unforgettable experience and one of next season’s highlights from an athletic point of view. So make sure to calendar the weekend of 27th/28th August 2011 in your agenda prominently…

Elka Stage 5 Review

Downhillnews is excited to get the chance to try out the new 2010 Elka Stage 5 rear shock. Ever since Elka announced they were jumping into the mountain bike suspension segment we were excited. The Elka will be mounted to the 2010 Santa Cruz V-10 we tested a little while back. The same test riders will give it a go and write down their thoughts after they are done. They will also fill out grade cards to help give a sense of how the Elka shock handled various situations.

The shock itself is a beautiful piece of work. Machining and billet aluminum makes up the Elka Stage 5. It has very finished look and feel to it. The knobs turn easily with nice clicks. Elka seems to have brought to market a very well built shock that will come custom tuned to the individuals particular bike.

2011 Transition TR450

The TR450 is our dedicated downhill racing machine. Heavily researched and selected with direct input from the Transition Racing Team, this is an aggressive geo built for speed and stability. With a careful ratio between chainstay length and head angle, the frame has a neutral feel in corners with good rider weight balance between the front and rear wheels. The TR450 gets 8.25” of travel from a 9.5” x 3” shock placed low in the front triangle. The linkage was tuned to provide a gradual change from beginning to ending leverage rate. The suspension ramps up very evenly through the travel to give the bike a supple top stroke and good bottom out control without excessive sag or mid stroke wallow. This result is a consistent progressive suspension feel that is predictable and yields a high amount of tunability. We set out to make the cleanest looking DH bike on the market that could be ridden hard and put away wet while being a dependable top level race bike you can trust race after race.

2011 TR450

2011 Transition TR250

New from Transition for 2011 is the mini DH bike called the TR250. The TR250 borrows many great race proven characteristics from it's sibling the TR450 to create a tight and responsive short travel DH bike that absolutely rips. Making the TR250 versatile was the top priority with adjustable chainstay length, travel, BB height and head angle, there is nothing on this bike you can't tweak. The suspension features the same great progressive feel as the TR450 but offers adjustable travel settings for two distinct feels at 160 or 180mm of travel depending on your mood. The TR250 is meant to be ridden hard and put away wet since it is extremely easy to maintain. This bike is built for riders that love DH style bikes but are looking for something more playful that is incredibly easy to throw around that can still rail down gnarly downhill lines.

26 Pre Runner Pedal Test

Twenty6 is a small component manufacturing company based out of Belgrade Montana. Owner Tyler Jarosz has been involved with bikes almost his whole life. You can tell just by picking up a pair of their pedals. These are not cheap molded, plastic, or aluminum hunks with screws thrown into them. These pedals truly are a work of art. They are CNC'd from 6061-t6 aluminum into thin, concave shapes that look as if Boyd Coddington spent years shaping them and are big enough to land an F-14 onto. They have an offset parallelogram platform with replaceable traction pins. They have self-lubricating turcite bushings and come with either chromoly or titanium axles.
