2010 BMR Series Race #3 &*#@ Trail

Another local race happened again this weekend. Living in California allows riding twelve months out of the year. It just so happens that a local race series starts about the beginning of February in this neck of the woods. This is in preparation of the collegiate series.

This race was held on the most technical trail in the area and also the western USA. The turnout of riders was good and there were a fair number of spectators. The trail is difficult to walk up from the bottom but people manage to hike up and find what looks like the most likely obstacle to give riders a problem. There the spectators will perch and cheer riders on as they make they way down the hill.

In total ten riders showed up to challenge themselves and the trail. That is what is so great about races like these. Yes you racing against others but there is always the search for that perfect run or clearing that section you have never done before. This trail is perfect for that type of mind game.

Overall the riders had good runs. There were a few pinch flats and a couple spills. The notable fall came on the second run of the day when Mark Hesser was about to cross the finish line. Approaching the finish rider’s fall about fifty feet in short order. So the run up is steep and filled with sharp rocks that are covered by smaller chunks of shale. It can get a little squirrelly sometimes and after navigating that you have about a six-foot drop onto a road. Mark looked a little shaky going through the rocks and considering his first time riding the trail was the day before it is totally understandable. He flipped over the bars just feet before the drop and crossed the line while going head over heels over the drop! Luckily he walked away laughing but as it was happening it appeared very serious.

Leland once again laid claim to throwing down the fastest time and winning first place on one of the hairiest trails around. He beat second place by seven seconds and almost beat out his record run for the trail. Check out the time below.

1. Leland O’Connor 1:48.37
